At Pipsticks Walks we are privileged to be able to claim the ‘Nationally Important Landscapes’ of the Chiltern Hills and North Wessex Downs as our office!
This is a living, working countryside whose character has been forged by nature and shaped by people over thousands of years. Across this varied landscape is a rich variety of habitats, flora and fauna, brick and flint cottages and historic churches and inns, all waiting for you to explore on foot.
However, this landscape that we cherish is under increasing pressures from development and access. It is, therefore, important to us that we support our local farming communities and groups such as the local Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) and the Chiltern Society who, as guardians of our land, work endlessly to care for and manage it in a sustainable way.
Anyone who has been out walking with us will know our passion for the natural environment and cultural heritage, and how we share that passion with you. Our commitment to working sustainably in our local communities will help to ensure that you and future generations are able to enjoy the places we love to walk.
Our Commitment
From the feedback we receive we think we are doing ok, but we always strive to do better. To this end we are committed to:
Inspire everyone to foster a connection to our environment, to recognise and understand the uniqueness and fragility of the landscapes, habitats, and cultural heritage here in the Chilterns and North Wessex Downs and beyond, so that they too will want to cherish it for future generations
Support local enterprise - arts and crafts, food and drink, breweries, pubs and cafes, and more
Take nothing but pictures and awesome memories - leave nothing but footprints
Encourage use of public transport or car sharing whenever possible
Operate our office and activities as sustainably as possible, including taking care to source our outdoor gear from companies who take sustainability seriously
Support, and encourage others to support, local and national charities (such as the Chilterns Society, Wildlife Trust, Bluebells Day Care and Style Acre, Woodland Trust, Butterfly Conservation and RSPB)
How you can help
Adhere to the Countryside Code - Respect other people, Protect the environment, Enjoy the outdoors
Stay local and buy local - There are many fantastic independent places to stay, eat and drink and shop in the area (many of which have been personally tested by us!)
Reduce your car use - Many of our walks are planned to be easily reached by public transport (information is provided on our walk descriptions) or we may be able to offer a pick up from the station or bus stop
Think sustainably when buying your outdoor gear - Support manufacturers and brands that take their social and environmental responsibility seriously. Avoid single use items. Use a reusable water bottle, food container and rechargeable batteries
Be a sustainability champion! - Tell people about our wonderful environment and how important it is to you and others. Do some voluntary work in conservation or encouraging and support others to enjoy the outdoors. Acknowledge the positive work of others (or let them know that they could do better). It all helps!
